MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee softball took down the WKU Hilltoppers in a thrilling 4-3 win on Sunday, April 13. All three games in the series were decided by just one run, with MTSU taking games one and three.
The Blue Raiders (21-22, 9-9 CUSA) and Hilltoppers (21-18, 7-10 CUSA) entered Sunday's match with the series tied and a crucial game three looming. WKU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second inning, before Addy Edgmon blasted a solo homer in the third to cut the deficit to 2-1. It was Edgmon's second home run of the series, capping a strong performance against her former team.
Just a few batters later, Lexi Medlock roped an RBI double to score Jana Want and even the score at two apiece. The next batter, Julia Garcia, ripped a single to left field to bring home Ansley Blevins and give the Blue Raiders a 3-2 lead.
The Hilltoppers tied it again in the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field. The game remained deadlocked at three, going into the bottom of the seventh, where the magic happened.
With one out in the inning, Jana Want stepped into the batter's box. On a 2-2 count, she launched a no-doubt homer to left-center field to end the game and secure the series win. It was Want's ninth home run and 33rd RBI of the season. "That was an emotion-filled game, and I was glad I was able to contribute to the team and help us win," Want said after the game.
