Brown leads Webb to state tournament

A year ago, Conner Brown was the lone member of the Webb School that qualified for the TSSAA Div. II Class A state tournament.

On Monday, Brown punched his return trip ticket to the state tournament but this season, he'll compete with the rest of the Feet after Webb finished second in the Middle Region tournament, held Monday at River Bend Country Club.

“My goal was to make it individually, but the fact my team gets to go with me is really special,” Brown said.

Keeping with recent trends, Brown won medalist honors during the region tournament and posted the round-low score of 67 to lead the Feet.

As a team, Webb posted a 313 final score, which coach Jeff Mitchell attributed to the thriving team environment.

“I've had more fun these last two weeks because they've all pulled together and they've made it a team environment,” Mitchell said.

While Brown has been the unquestioned leader on the Webb golf team over the course of the season and his leadership went beyond the actual competition on the course.

“Conner did a lot of course prep. He took a lot of interest in his whole team doing well. In golf, that's a little bit uncommon. I've been around a lot of high school golfers and they can be not that way,” Mitchell said.

Even though it can be an individual-oriented sport, the Feet have pulled together at the right time of the season and will play for a state championship next week.

While Brown earned medalist honors, the rest of the team appears to be playing their best golf of the season as well.

Noah Brown finished fifth overall for Webb and posted a 74, while Andrew Reeves finished with an 80.

Charlie Mitchell shot a 92 to conclude varsity scoring for Webb as well.

Webb was also represented in the girls' competition on Monday as well by Kennedy Clarkson, who finished with a 99.

“We have a lot of guys who are improving and played their tails off in the district and region tournaments,” Brown said.

“I feel really good about our confidence level. The district was very strong and we could have been anywhere first through sixth and we ended up winning. I think that got our attention and we thought 'Hey, let's try to go do that next week,' because they got a little bit of confidence,” Mitchell said.

After winning the district title last week and following up a region score that was one stroke off the lead, Brown's experience of playing in the state tournament a year ago hopes to pay dividends next week.

“It gave me a lot of confidence and boosted me quite a bit. I'm very excited, especially since my team gets to go with me,” he said.

With the team pulling together and clicking on all cylinders at the right time of the season, Mitchell says he has high expectations for how the team can perform next week with the state's best competition.

“We had just everybody helping each other. It's been cool to see the team aspect of it,” he said.

Webb will tee off in Day 1 of the TSSAA Div. II Class A state tournament on Monday at WillowBrook Golf Club.
