Cascade claims outright 8-A regular season title

EAGLEVILLE - By now, the Cascade Champions are used to playing close games in the final minutes of a game.

Five times now this season, Cascade (11-6, 8-0) has found a way to execute with the game on the line and come away with a one-possession victory.

Tuesday night's 50-47 win at Eagleville (8-12, 5-3) was perhaps the biggest win of the season so far as it gave the Champions the outright District 8-A regular season title.

"It's a huge accomplishment that we're happy with. That's been a goal of ours. On the other side of things, we don't want to relax. We have a big game Friday. We have a big game Saturday. The rest of our games are big games," Champion coach Chris Lawson said.

It hasn't been a single contributor that's allowed Cascade to reach a nine-game win-streak, but rather a complete ensemble of players stepping up at key moments in the game.

"We're riding high, but to me, we're getting production from multiple players at different times. That gives us an opportunity to have success," Lawson said.

Whether it's a key rebound, a key foul shot, or a three-pointer, Cascade is finding ways to win and that could be a dangerous thing as the calendar flips to February.

On Tuesday night, Eagleville maintained control of the scoreboard for the bulk of regulation.

Outside shooting for Cascade, however, was a struggle, with the Champs managing just five treys.

Trailing Eagleville by two points with just under two minutes to go, Cascade came up with a key stop on the defensive end of the court and set up an opportunity for a go-ahead play.

It was sophomore Chance Brown who delivered on a three-pointer with 1:31 left in regulation to give Cascade a 47-46 lead.

Brown's basket was the first Cascade lead since the 2:38 mark of the third quarter.

In the final 90 seconds, Cascade executed its game plan to near perfection on the defensive end of the court and it was senior Alex Allison who grabbed three crucial rebounds, preventing second-shot opportunities by the Eagles.

"Tonight, Chance Brown came in and hit a big three in the corner. He came down again and instead of pushing it and trying to get to the rim, he pulled it out to milk clock. Seth Countess stepped up and hit a three. Alex Allison came up with three or four huge rebounds in a row at the end," Lawson said.

"I told those guys in the last time out, 'Hey, we've been here several times. You guys are used to this.'"

That "been there, done that" mentality proved clutch for the Champs in the final seconds.

The game was never firmly in hand until the final buzzer as Cascade missed a couple of free throws that gave the Eagles a glimmer of hope in the final seconds.

Over the final 39 seconds, Cascade went 3-for-7 at the line.

Even with a pair of makes at the line by Allison with four ticks left on the clock, Eagleville still had an outside shot at a three-pointer to tie the game.

That last second opportunity never came to fruition as Eagleville's shot missed the mark as the buzzer sounded.

All season long, it's been the coaching staff's game plan to play through the post and utilize the Champs' size in the paint.

On Tuesday, Justis Carter rattled loose for a game-high 14 points, eight of which came in the third quarter.

"I think part of that, teams know he's capable and they key a little bit more on him inside. He gets a little more help. We've talked about that and worked on some things with all our posts. When you have big guys inside, teams are going to have to send help. I thought he (Carter) played really well," Lawson said.

While timely execution has been important in Cascade's current win-streak, what's been a foundation of the team's success since Day 1 has been a stellar defensive effort.

During the previous meeting in January, Eagleville's Jensen Linton posted a game-high 20 points and on Tuesday, looked well on his way to a repeat performance with nine points in the first half.

But Cascade's lockdown defense held Linton to just two points in the second half.

"The defense has proven to be good and will continue to be good simply because our guys have so much heart and they really take coaching well," Lawson said.

"When we go over stuff about matchups, switching, or recognizing who they need to be on, they soak it up. They study it. They have bought into the defensive side of things. We've seen when we shoot the ball well, it's a really good mix."

While the offense has been a struggle at times in the last week, Cascade is still getting production across the board.

Seven players for Cascade penciled their name in the scoring column and three reached double figures, led by Carter's 14-point effort.

Allison and Brown added 10 apiece.

Damian Stingley led Eagleville with 14 points.

While Tuesday night's win checked off one of Cascade's goals for the season with an outright regular season district title, Lawson says the task now shifts to keeping the team focused on the next game as the regular season draws to a close.

"We don't want to slack off because we've achieved one goal. So we're kind of looking at it from both sides a little bit," he said.

Cascade closes the week with another district contest against Moore County in front of an expanded home crowd capacity on Friday night.
