BELL BUCKLE, TN – The Cascade Champions led for a good portion of the second half against the visiting Class 4-A Coffee County Central Red Raiders, but were unable to hold off a late comeback attempt, falling 55-54 in OT on Friday night at home.
A two-point fourth quarter ultimately doomed the Champions, as Coffee County came back from a 47-41 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied at 49-49.
Cascade saw three players score in double-figures with Noah Watson, Henry Stone, and Kaleb Kelso scoring 12 points, 11 points, and 11 points, respectively. Jason Cullum chipped in with eight points, and Tyler Rodgers added seven second half points as well.
For Coffee County, the Red Raiders also got three scorers in double-figures with Brady Wright, MJ Rollman, and Audie Nicoll scoring 13 points, 11 points, and 10 points, respectively.
Coffee County got off to a torrid start on the road, taking a 21-15 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Cascade outscored the visitors, 14-11, to cut the lead to 32-29 going into the halftime locker room.
The Champions’ run continued in the third quarter, as Cascade jumped on the Red Raiders with an emphatic 18-9 period to take a 47-41 lead into the final frame. However, the Champions could not maintain the same level of offensive output in the fourth quarter, only managing to score two points against Coffee County’s eight, sending the game into overtime tied at 49-49.
Despite connecting on seven three-pointers as a team compared to just four for Coffee County, the Red Raiders took advantage of a discrepancy in free throw shooting to slowly but surely get back in the game late. Rodgers connected on two free throws in the second half, but that was all Cascade could muster up at the charity stripe. Noah Watson, who had 10 first-half points, ended up fouling out in the second half as well.
In the extra session Coffee County outscored Cascade, 6-5, to pick up their first win of the season in exhilarating fashion, 55-54.
Cascade falls to 2-1 (0-0) and will continue their homestand on Tuesday night against Summertown, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 starting at 5:45 p.m. with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
