At least 20 cats were left behind when a resident vacated an apartment on Belmont Avenue, Shelbyville police were told Wednesday,
One neighbor said no cats had been seen in the area until the resident in question left, according to police. The departing resident had been seen leaving dog crates containing food by a nearby fence before leaving,
Police turned over four adult cats and 10 kittens to Shelbyville Animal Control. Traps were placed for any remaining cats.
Drug charges
A man police were told was “distributing cocaine throughout the Shelbyville area” was arrested Wednesday after SPD Lt. James Wilkerson saw him driving on Wartrace Pike.
Antonio Darnell Cooper, 41, of Ranchero Drive was stopped and Detectives Cody Swift and Nathan Everhart searched his vehicle due to his still being on parole for felony drug convictions.
Swift found scales and a bill containing remnants of powdered cocaine.
Cooper told police he is not a “big time dealer” but would “sell a few hundred dollars worth of cocaine here and there,” and was recently charged with possessing approximately 30 grams of cocaine in Rutherford County.
New local charges include possession of a schedule II drug and paraphernalia and violation of parole. He was held without bond.
