Champs on the rise in 8-A race

Things are starting to come together for the Cascade Champions.

On Friday night, the Champs (6-6, 3-0) exploded out of the gates with a strong first half on the offensive end of the court and paired with a suffocating defensive effort in a 76-47 District 8-A victory.

"We're really coming together. At the beginning of the year, we were missing a key part here or there and playing pretty tough competition. Things are starting to click just a little bit," Cascade coach Chris Lawson.

Clicking indeed.

Three different players for Cascade hit double figures against the Eagles (4-10, 1-2), while two more were knocking on the door with nine points apiece.

Throughout the season, Lawson and his coaching staff has put an emphasis on the defensive end of the court and the results have been good so far.

In recent weeks, however, the coaching staff has made an extra point to focus on more point production.

For the second-straight game, the Champions reached well into the 70-point margin.

Cascade established control of the game's momentum in the first quarter and never let up.

With 2:30 left in the first frame, senior Ethan Swan made his return following an injury and on the first offensive possession, had a chance to set up a three-point play after he was fouled on the layup.

From there, Cascade closed the quarter on a 12-0 run to lead 20-8 after the first frame.

Eagleville responded with 16 points in the second quarter, only to be dwarfed by the Champs' 27 points.

By the half, Cascade led 47-24.

While the Champs have stuck to an inside-out game which has worked at times, Cascade limited second-shot opportunities by the Eagles and worked the ball in transition, which helped break the game open, according to Lawson.

"We work hard on defense. I get upset when we give up easy buckets. We held them to 47 points. That's big for us. What we've focused on the last couple of weeks is trying to produce more points. Part of that is pushing it when we can. Part of it is we're shooting the ball a little better," he said.

As a team, the Champs shot 11 treys, which follows Tuesday's game against Cornersville in which the Champs connected on 12 from the perimeter.

The game's pace slowed considerably in the second half, notably in the fourth quarter, when Cascade only tacked on 13 points.

Still, Chance Brown finished with a team-high 17 points off the bench. Lucas Clanton and Justis Carter added 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Jackson Davis and Landon Lane each tacked on nine.

Jensen Linton led all scorers for the Eagles with 20 points.

Cascade not only shot it well from the perimeter, but also at the free throw line, making good on 10-of-15 tries from the line.

The win marked Cascade's fourth-straight and third-straight District 8-A contest, which sets up a key week of district games, before making the turn through the district schedule.

On Tuesday, Cascade travels to Moore County to face the Raiders, who also sit 3-0 in the district standings, before closing the week at Huntland on Friday.

"When you go through your first round of the district, right now we're 3-0. That's a chance to be in the outright lead and that's huge come tournament time," Lawson said.
