HUNTLAND — Cascade had to survive a scare on Tuesday night at Huntland from the combined efforts of Bryalen Phillips and Zeier Golden.
The Hornet pair went for a combined 51 points, but in the end, Cascade’s depth and key points from its senior leaders landed the Champs a slim, 69-66 win to extend their win-streak to nine.
Golden took control of the game early and went for 12 points, including a pair of threes in the opening quarter to put Cascade in a 17-14 hole after the first quarter.
Huntland matched its point total from the first with another 17-point effort in the second quarter, while Cascade was able to hang close.
Five different Champions scored in the first half, and while Cascade was able to hang within striking distance by halftime, it wasn’t until the second half did the Cascade seniors explode on the scoreboard.
Trailing 34-28 entering the third, seniors Lucas Clanton and Jackson Davis were able to execute on the offensive end of the court.
Clanton rattled off eight points in the third, while Davis posted a 10-point quarter to spur a 22-point Champion third.
That trend continued in the fourth as Cascade got 12 more from Clanton, while Davis went for five in the final frame.
In the fourth, Cascade out-scored Huntland 19-16, which eventually was the final margin of victory.
Clanton posted a team-high 20 points, while Davis tallied 19.
Jayden Gulick also hit double figures and scored 10 points for Cascade, including a pair of first-half three-pointers.
In total, six Hornets scored on Tuesday, but it was Phillips who led all scorers with 27 points, while Golden added 24.
Both teams were efficient at the charity stripe, with Huntland going 11-for-16, while Cascade made 9-of-14.
Cascade was back on its home court on Friday night, hosting Lincoln County, however results were unavailable at press time.
