Champs unload on Cornersville for 2nd 8-A win

At times this season, offense has been a total struggle for the Cascade Champions.

That wasn't the case in the slightest on Tuesday night during a 78-38 blowout win against Cornersville.

"The biggest thing is, in my opinion, we didn't get the summer and it just took us a while to get to a point where we could feel everybody out, where they were best-suited to play, rotations and that kind of stuff," Champion coach Chris Lawson said.

"We're getting to a point now where we really have an idea of what we're trying to get. All of the guys have an idea of where we want the ball to go and what we want to run."

Everything certainly came together in the Champions' favor on Tuesday.

Thirteen different players for Cascade found their way into the scoring column, highlighted by Lucas Clanton's game-high 21 points.

Of his 21 points, Clanton drilled five of Cascade's 12 total treys, including four in the second quarter.

His perimeter game complemented the inside attack by the Champs, which Lawson says is the recipe for success.

"We talked a lot here lately about trying to score. Tonight, we really kind of broke loose. The key is we're starting to shoot the ball a little bit better outside. Our post play has been consistent, but when you start to add in some consistent shooting outside, plus post play inside, that's a good recipe," he said.

Cascade (5-6, 2-0) led 22-11 by the end of the first quarter and nearly hit the half-century mark by halftime.

Even with an 18-point lead at the half, the game never felt truly out of reach, until a back-breaking defensive effort in the third quarter.

Offensively, Cascade continued rolling in the third, posting another 20-point effort.

The difference came on defense, with the Champs holding the Bulldogs (1-9, 0-2) to just three points-a single trey by Andrew Santini at the 3:51 mark.

"Defensively, we've worked and worked and worked. We take a lot of pride in tonight only giving up 38 points," Lawson said.

With the lead and momentum well in hand, Cascade was able to work the reserves on the floor and nearly every player in the book found their way into the scoring column.

As a team, the Champs found a working recipe of consistent perimeter shooting, a strong inside game, and a stingy and disruptive defense.

Clanton led three Champs in double figures with his 21 points, while Chance Brown and Jacob Curl made the most of their time off the bench.

Brown scored 13 points, while Curl added 10.

Santini led the Bulldogs with six points.

While it took longer to develop without any summer work, playdays or preseason scrimmages, Lawson is pleased to see the team finding its identity at the beginning of the district play.

"I still felt like we had the guys, it was getting everybody to the the point we wanted them," Lawson said

While Friday's road win at Fayetteville City could play a factor down the road in district tiebreakers, Tuesday's win is just as important as Cascade remains perfect in district play thus far.

The Champs' attention now turns to a tricky Eagleville team, who could be a tricky opponent to prepare for.

"Eagleville coming in here is going to be good. They're capable of really playing well. They're well-coached," Lawson said.

Cascade will look for its third-straight District 8-A win on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
