HUNTLAND, TN – The Cascade Champions used a strong second quarter to pull away and comfortably coast to their second win of the season in their first road game of the season at the Huntland Hornets, 59-35.

After ending the first quarter ahead by just four points, 11-7, the visiting Champions outscored the hometown Hornets 17-2 in the second quarter to take a commanding 28-9 lead going into the halftime locker room, punctuated by a Cooper McElroy buzzer-beating three-pointer from the top of the key. Cascade’s perimeter defense never allowed Huntland to get into anything offensively, and the Champions routinely turned live-ball turnovers into fastbreak layups to blow the game open.

Kaleb Kelso led the way for Cascade with 13 points, including seven in the second half. Henry Stone finished with 10 points, Jason Cullum chipped in with nine points, Noah Watson added seven points, and the freshman, Cooper McElroy, tallied six points of his own in the big win.

For Huntland, it was a struggle on the offensive end all night long. Grant Jernigan led the way with 12 points, Landon Farmer added seven points, and Kannon Lafevers chipped in with six points of his own.

Coming out of the locker room for the second half, Huntland showed a few signs of life, keeping pace with Cascade and ending the quarter level with 13 points scored each. However, the Champion still held a borderline insurmountable 19-point lead, 41-22, with the final eight minutes on the way.

In the final frame, Cascade kept the pedal to the metal, outscoring the Hornets 18-13 in the fourth quarter despite clearing the bench in the final minutes. Jaxon Gulick, a classmate of McElroy, opened his Champions’ scoring account as well, going 3/4 at the charity stripe in the final few minutes of Cascade’s 24-point road win.

Huntland falls to 0-1 (0-0) and will travel to play Wayne County on Saturday.

Cascade improves to 2-0 (0-0) and will have a quick turnaround as they host Coffee County on Friday night, LIVE on The Zinger 100.9 starting at 5:45 p.m.
