County Emergency Team Meets About Weekend Weather

Posted

Bedford County emergency service and highway officials met with County Mayor Chad Graham Wednesday morning to discuss the expected winter storm event, predicted by Shelbyville Weather (National Weather Service) to start on Friday.

The National Weather Service predicts several inches of snowfall beginning Friday. With expected cold temperatures this weekend, some rural roads could be an issue.

Emergency officials urge citizens to prepare for the worst, and make sure they have adequate food, fuel, and medical supplies (such as oxygen canisters.)

Bedford County Highway Department has already announced the snow routes that will be its focus in the event of a winter storm. You can see that list and map at https://www.bedfordcountytn.gov/government/highway_department/snow_routes.php

The highway department ordered new snow plows in February 2024, after a major winter storm last year, but they have still not been delivered. The department will rely on graders and will work with a third party to use plows as available. Highway crews will work 12-hour shifts Friday and Saturday, but only during the daytime hours. It is dangerous, and less effective, to try to clear roads overnight.

Currently, if the snow arrives as forecast, Highway Superintendent Mark Clanton projects that county convenience centers will close at midday Friday and remain closed Saturday.
