UNIONVILLE - It was a defensive struggle between the Community Vikings and Fayetteville Tigers as the teams remained deadlocked for over 60 minutes with neither team able to score a go-ahead goal as the game ended in a 1-1 tie in a District 6-A soccer matchup Thursday night.

Community (2-3-3, 2-2-1) took a 1-0 lead as Randy Anica simply outran the Tiger defense and scored from in front of the net with 13 minutes elapsed in the first half.

The Tigers evened the score with a goal three minutes later.

The following 63 minutes saw both teams battling to take the lead, but to no avail.

Viking goalie Villamar Anica stopped all chances after the tie and saw a Fayetteville attempt from point-blank range hit the bar with six minutes remaining.

The Vikings had one final opportunity to take the lead, but a hard shot in the closing seconds was stopped by the Tiger goalkeeper.

"We scored early and they scored early and it was good defense the rest of the way," Coach Cody Pierce of the Vikings said.

"It was a good, physical ballgame."

Community travels to Fayetteville in a return match Tuesday with playoff implications on the line.

"We play them again and it could determine whether we're home or away in that first round," Pierce said.
