MANCHESTER — After trailing by double figures in the first half, Shelbvyille Central battled back against host Coffee County in the District 6-AAAA consolation game on Saturday night and tied the game at two different points in the fourth quarter.
But a string of three-pointers by Coffee County’s Dayne Crosslin fended off the Eagles’ comeback bid as the tournament hosts finished third in the tournament with a 60-52 win over the Eagles.
Early on, it was an all-out struggle against Coffee County’s full-court press, that allowed the Red Raiders to build a 20-7 lead after the first frame.
Shelbyville Central struggled to break the press and turned the ball over which led to several points for Coffee County.
Even into the second frame, the Eagles struggled to match the Red Raiders’ scoring until late in the half when the Eagles were able to get a handful of baskets to fall.
Still, Coffee County led 30-19 at the break.
By halftime, Kyler Trice had knocked down three three-pointers and had 11 of the Eagles’ 19 points.
But into the third quarter, other Eagles got into the scoring mix and Shelbyville was able to go on a 20-11 run in the quarter and spread the offense among five players.
Shelbyville made four treys in the quarter, with Joe Harris hitting one with a minute left in the third, cutting the Coffee County lead to 39-35.
On the following Red Raider possession, Harris came up with the loose handle and hit the ensuing layup, further cutting the Coffee County lead to just one possession.
Shelbyville continued to hit shots and remained close on the scoreboard. With 7:20 left in the game, Rocky Chandler came up with a steal and tied the game at 41 apiece.
Eventually, Coffee County was able to stretch its lead back out to a few possessions and with two minutes to go, Crosslin delivered the dagger to the Eagles with back-to-back three-pointers to put the Red Raiders up by 10.
In total, Coffee County saw Crosslin lead all scorers with 19 points.
Dieon Saberon and Cooper Keel also hit double figures and scored 14 and 12, respectively.
For the Eagles, Trice led Shelbyville Central with 18 points, while Harris added 14.
In total, the Eagles connected on nine treys, with Trice knocking down four.
For his efforts, Trice was the lone Eagle to be named to the All-Tournament team.
The Eagles will be on the road in the opening round of region play on Saturday night.
