FAYETTEVILLE - Shelbyville Central's Golden Eagles hit the road for a District 8-AAA matchup at Lincoln County and came up on the short end of a 55-52 score in an elimination game to end the season on Monday night.
The Eagles (9-13) posted leads at the end of every quarter but were outscored by six points in the fourth period which ultimately proved to be the difference.
"Tough way to end a season. Proud of our guys all year long. This has been a season that no one has ever experienced with COVID-19 and the issues that came with it," Shelbyville Central coach Andrew Hicks said.
"Our guys showed up every day ready to work. We won more games than have been won in the last five years and lost six games this year on the final possession."
Shelbyville Central led 18-17 at the close of the first quarter, 27-27 at the intermission and was up 42-38 after three periods.
Devyn Heath connected on four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Eagles with Jayshon Jones adding a dozen.
Owen Sandlin scored 15 points for the Falcons with Eli Ogle collecting 12.
"We were very blessed to have a strong, talented group of seniors who I truly believed deserved to advance to the region tourney but things just didn't go our way," Hicks said.
"I'm proud of the growth of the program and looking forward to continuing to work as we bring Shelbyville back to hanging banners in the Rick Insell Gymnasium."
