Eaglettes fall to Warren Co.

On Tuesday night, Shelbyville came out with great energy following a win last week, but it proved to not quite be enough in an overtime loss to Warren County.

Entering the match on Tuesday, Shelbyville was hampered with several injuries which led to key players having to step up their roles on the field.

“Going into the game we knew it was going to be hard dealing with our injuries on the team. Warren County has a returning team and they are very structured,” Eaglettes coach Chris Fritz said.

Warren County controlled the first half against the Eaglettes by being quick on their feet, which allowed the Lady Pioneers to score a quick goal in the first.

The goal did not bring the Eaglettes down and instead, the home team fired back with a lot of fire and energy to match the Warren County score on a goal by Kira King.

“Kira really stepped up and became a really good leader,” Fritz said.

Not only did King help the Eaglettes on the offensive end, Sophie Miller stepped up as well.

In the second half, Warren County controlled the possession, despite the Eaglettes breaking through and finding a single score.

In the waning seconds of the second half, an Eageltte yellow card allowed a second-shot chance for Warren County, but a save in goal kept the score tied and forced overtime.

During the penalty kick session, the Eaglettes opted for a first shot by King, who found the back of the net.

Her counterpart from Warren County also found the back of the net on the first try for the Lady Pioneers.

As the penalty kicks continued, the score remained tied at three apiece.

After the first set of kicks didn’t decide a winner, the game turned to one more set of kicks and in the end, it was Warren County that came through with the game-winner.

As the season continues its march towards the postseason, Fritz says his team will continue to work on ball control which will hopefully pave the way for more wins in the coming weeks.

“I was very proud of the girls, and how they have pushed through all the injuries, and how they came out playing hard against a team who has a returning team,” Fritz said.
