Eaglettes fall to Warren Co. in tourney opener

After battling from the start, Shelbyville Central’s Golden Eaglettes saw Warren County pull away mid-way in the fourth quarter in a 56-42 loss in the open round of the District 6-AAAA Tournament played in the Rick Insell Gymnasium on Monday night.
The Eaglettes will return to tournament action on Friday evening at 6 against Franklin County in the consolation round.
Warren County will face top-seed Coffee County in the championship game on Friday night at 7:30.
The Eaglettes jumped out to a 9-2 lead and were in control 11-2 at the 4:52 mark of the opening frame after back-to-back baskets by Jaleigha Harris and Paige Blackburn, on the way to a 14-8 advantage at the end of the quarter.
“We got off to a great start but foul trouble took its toll on us,” Eaglette coach Kyle Turnham said.
“I’ve preached for two days to drive the ball against them (Warren County) and get the ball inside to Lilly (Brown). We didn’t do either anywhere near enough and settled for too many 3-point shots. Shooting 2-of-17 from the 3-point line won’t win us many games.”
Warren County regrouped to post a 26-20 lead at the intermission and was in control 38-29 going into the fourth quarter.
Shelby Smartt led the winners with 19 points.
Kyra Perkins added 14.
Harris finished with 15 points with Blackburn collecting a dozen to lead Shelbyville Central.
“We’ve got to bounce back and get ourselves ready for the consolation game on Friday. It’s a huge game and we still have a lot to play for,” Turnham said.
