Eagleville keeps Lady Champs off balance

For the majority of Friday night's District 8-A contest, the Cascade Lady Champion tried to play catch up against an exceptionally balanced Eagleville team.

While the Lady Champs cut the Lady Eagle lead to as little as four points, Cascade was unable to complete the comeback and saw the game slip away in the fourth quarter.

Eagleville went on to take the victory, 64-47.

"Their size gave us some problems. With the exception of Jordan, we're small. They started out with that 2-3 and I think we gave them some problems offensively with that. They took their big girl out so they could adjust defensively to that. Unfortunately, we couldn't match that intensity on defense they had," Lady Champ coach Kendall Hampton said.

Eagleville's balance immediately gave Cascade issues.

The Lady Eagles were able to work the ball inside, score off the dribble and drive, as well as connect from the outside.

"You have to have everybody on. We can't miss a rotation or a help because teams like that will take advantage of those opportunities, and they did. Every time we got a little momentum going, they would hit a three or get a three-point play. And it was all things we could have prevented for the most part," Hampton said.

Even with that balance, a baseline jumper by Annabelle Calvert with 1:42 left in the third quarter brought Cascade within four points of tying the game.

Eagleville responded to Cascade's push by tacking on 17 more points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

"They beat us down the floor a few times and out-hustled us a few times. Those points really mattered. They were very good about executing and being patient on offense," Hampton said.

Eagleville placed four players in double figures with Izzy Sawyer's 16 points leading the way.

Jordan Green matched that effort for Cascade and established herself as the go-to source of offense inside the paint.

Lani Jones helped balance the Cascade offense and connected on three of the team's five made treys.

"We changed our defense and I think it really helped us, but after so many times, you figure it out if you're a good coach and they did. So we had to adjust again and I think by then we were out of steam," Hampton added.

Even with the loss, Cascade still has a chance to move up the District 8-A standings with two key games at Moore County and Huntland this week.

Cascade will travel to Moore County on Tuesday and finish the week at Huntland.

Both games are slated for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
