Energy-related zoning changes approved

Zoning changes allowing Renewable Energy Development Overlay zones were approved by Bedford County Commission at Tuesday’s meeting.

The changes prevent so-called “energy farms” from encroaching too near to locations to such as industrial parks. The regulations also prevent those facilities from being on higher elevations making them visible from long distances, and encourage locations such as rocky soil unsuitable for agriculture.

New commissioner

Adam Thomas was unanimously selected as Commissioner Chasity Gunn’s replacement in the 6th District. Gunn is resigning at August’s end due to an impending move from the district, which encompasses southern Shelbyville and is also represented by Bill Anderson.

Gunn and Anderson both recommended Thomas, a longtime Nashville police sergeant who now is employed with a family-owned firm which builds custom homes.
Thomas told commissioners he cares about the county’s future because he is raising his four children, all under age 13, here.

Other actions

•Bedford County’s participation in the Electronic Monitoring Indigency Fund was renewed at a $5,000 cost. The fund provides monitoring devices for individuals convicted of alcohol or drug violations. Local governments are responsible for 50 percent of the associated costs.

•A letter confirming Bedford County’s debt management policy, an annual cash flow forecast and a confirmation of documented internal financial controls was approved. The letter must be sent to the state as part of requirements for the ThreeStar rural development program.
