UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens used their experience and a strong night of serving in the first and third sets to defeat the Forrest Lady Rockets 3-0 in the opening volleyball match of the season for both teams.
Not only was it the first match of the season for the Lady Rockets, but also the first match in the inaugural season of volleyball at Forrest.
The Viqueens used the serving of their most experienced players to grab and extend their lead in the opening set.
Jacey Collier served five straight points for the Viqueens as Community took an early 6-1 lead. After the Lady Rockets cut the Viqueen advantage to 13-8, M. J. Simmons was the server for six straight Community points as the Viqueens extended their lead to 20-8.
Community ended the first set with a 25-9 win.
Both teams struggled from the service line early in the second set before the Viqueens took over.
Collier served nine straight points as Community broke a 4-4 tie and went on to defeat the Lady Rockets 25-8.
The Viqueens controlled the third set from the outset.
Collier once again came up big with 13 points on serve as Community scored the first 14 points of the set en route to a 25-2 match-clinching win.
"Our serving in the second set was lacking, but we picked it up in the third," Coach Tiffany Klages of the Viqueens said.
"By the third set, the first game jitters were out."
"I was really glad to have a first-game win on the season," Klages added.
Both teams are in action on Tuesday.
Community travels to Eagleville while Forrest opens district play with a match at Cascade.
