Feet ride 3rd quarter to win over Champs

There wasn't much separating the Cascade Champions and the Webb Feet on Friday night.

By in large, the two teams played about as evenly as possible, except for a third-quarter run by Webb, which ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

During that run, the Feet went on a 17-2 romp through the third quarter that paved the way for the 61-45 win over the Champs on Friday night.

“The third quarter was the difference. We've had one game where we weren't able to have a run. That was the difference in the game right there,” Webb coach Jeff Mitchell said.

Cascade senior Alex Allison hit a two-point basket midway through the third quarter, but Webb answered by closing the frame on a 17-2 run that broke the game wide open.

“I think we got a little bit tired. I told the guys at halftime, we executed our game plan and made them play our game the whole first half. We had to come out with the same energy and do the same thing in the second half. We started really well for about the first three or four minutes, then they got hot on that run. Then, we got sucked into playing their game,” Cascade coach Chris Lawson said.

Aside from the third quarter difference, the two teams played about as evenly as possible.

Webb led 12-11 after the first quarter and just 24-23 at the half, with neither team gaining a significant edge over the other.

Three different players for Webb reached double figures and were led by senior Jordan Jenkins' 14 points.

For the Champs, it was senior Landon Lane's night to shine as he led all scorers with 19 points, 15 of which came from the perimeter.

“He played really well tonight. We've got to maintain that,” Lawson said.

While the Champs were effective from the arc, Cascade struggled at the line.

As a team, Cascade made just 3-of-12 tries.

Webb on the other hand made the most of their time at the line and cashed in on 18-of-27 attempts.

Friday's non-district game marked the end of the first week of the season in which both teams are still trying to figure out personnel and how to play together.

“We have a lot to improve on—rebounding, taking care of the ball and just getting the 50/50 loose balls,” Mitchell said.

Having graduated key players like JJ Platt and Keon Johnson from last season, Webb is trying to put the pieces together of a team looking to reforge its identity in 2020.

“We're trying to figure out each other and learn how to play together. We're kind of figuring it out. I anticipate them getting better throughout the year, but it's going to take some time,” Mitchell said.

For Cascade, the name of the game is learning a new coach and figuring out the correct pieces of the puzzle to reestablish itself as a dominant force.

“They continued to play hard to the end. I think there's good things to come with this group. We're still trying to feel each other out and trying to see who can produce on offense and who can get stops for us on defense,” Lawson said.

“We have to have some consistency. We scored 45 tonight and 44 on Tuesday night at Nolensville. It's going to be tough to hold opponents under that and win ball games. We have to get consistent production from some others.”

The Champions will return to action on Tuesday, hosting Community at 7:30 p.m., while Webb travels to Centennial.
