UNIONVILLE – After a slow start, the Community Viqueens scored three first half goals in just under four minutes to right the ship and stayed undefeated on Senior Night with a 4-1 win over the Fayetteville Lady Tigers in a District 6-A soccer matchup Monday.
The Lady Tigers were able to stay with the Viqueens early on and took a 1-0 lead with a goal 10 minutes into the first half.
Community (9-0-2, 5-0-2) had difficulty finding its momentum in the first 20 minutes of the half. The Viqueens came close to scoring with 19 minutes remaining, but an offside nullified a tying goal.
The Viqueens got the ball rolling and made it 1-1 at the 16:23 mark when Jemima Ramos found the back of the net with a shot from the middle of the field.
It was just 31 seconds later when Ramos scored her second goal with an assist from Lexi Molnar to put Community up 2-1.
Sara Beth Stacy rebounded a shot off the Fayetteville keeper with 12:47 left to put the Viqueens up 3-1 and end the first half scoring.
Community kept the pressure on the Lady Tigers in the second half, but only managed one additional goal with 26:32 left as Stacy outraced the Fayetteville keeper to the ball and followed with the score.
"We started off really flat and kind of had a letdown after a big game against Cascade the other night," Coach Chris Brothers of the Viqueens said. "We tried to warn against it, but it just happens."
"After we got the three goals that quickly, it turned the game around," Brothers added. "We had lots of opportunities all night long, but we just couldn't capitalize on them, or we could have scored a few more."
"I was proud of them for not letting the adversity bother them. They bounced back, got the momentum back, and controlled the rest of the game," Brothers said.
