As a subscriber, I want to thank you for your newspaper’s excellent coverage of the terrible Covid-19 outbreak in your community.
I am 100% sure that your newspaper's coverage and your editorial regarding this health crisis in Shelbyville/Bedford County played a major role in the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration’s decision to not hold its annual “Spring Fun Show” event on May 21-23, 2020.
The grassroots Citizens Campaign Against “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses started an online Change.Org Petition - “Please Don’t Allow “Big Lick” Walking Horse Show To Be Held During Covid-19 Outbreak!” It gained over 3,000 signatures in seven days, and each time a person signed it, this message was sent to local leaders.
PROTECT PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY
Please don’t endanger the public health and safety of your community, and others, by allowing this “Big Lick” Tennessee Walking Horse show to be held at Shelbyville, Bedford County, TN during this record Covid-19 outbreak.
The wisdom and judgment of the public officials and leaders of Shelbyville, Bedford County is now being weighed in the balance.
Please make the right decision.
Our advocates, practically all Tennesseans, have come to your community for the past five years to exercise our First Amendment rights to peacefully protest against the “Big Lick” Animal Cruelty to Tennessee Walking Horses outside the Celebration gates. While doing so, they are extraordinarily well-protected by the officers of the Shelbyville Police Department.
We feel a closeness with the people who live in your wonderful town, and we were glad to see the Celebration cancel plans to have the horse show on May 21-23, which, in my opinion, would have recklessly endangered lives.
