Harold Dean “Mac” McMurtry

Mr. Harold Dean “Mac” McMurtry, age 87, of New Johnsonville passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at St. Thomas Three Rivers Hospital.
He was born November 21, 1934, in Paducah, Kentucky, to Ewing William McMurtry and Willie Charlotte Wilson McMurtry.
Harold graduated from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, High School, and attended Cumberland College. After his family moved to Shelbyville, he joined the U.S. Navy for 4 years active duty and later served in the Navy Reserves. Mac, as he was affectionately known, married Linda Sue Haynes on August 25, 1960, and they had three children. In 1969 he moved his family to New Johnsonville and began working for TVA and retired from E.I. DuPont after 26 years.
Mac enjoyed woodworking, especially scroll saw work, lawn care, and traveling. He was a volunteer member of the New Johnsonville Fire Department for many years. He was also an active member of Trace Creek Baptist Church and participated in the Disaster Relief program.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, November 3 and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday, November 4, at Humphreys County Funeral Home in Waverly.
Funeral services for Mr. McMurtry will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Mark Warren officiating. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Shelbyville.
Survivors: wife of 62 years, Linda Haynes McMurtry of New Johnsonville; daughters, Susan McMurtry Kelly (Rusty) of LaVergne and Anita McMurtry Hewitt of Smyrna; grandson, Reed Kelly; step-grandchildren, Michael Hewitt and Matthew Hewitt; step-great-grandchildren, Landon Hewitt, Eli Hewitt, Addisyn Hewitt, Aubrie Hewitt and Ariel Hewitt.
He was preceded in death by parents: Ewing William McMurtry and Willie Charlotte Wilson McMurtry; a son, David Haynes McMurtry; a half-sister, Reba McMurtry Hill; grandchildren, Russ Kelly and Jason Hewitt.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to any of the following: J.S.T. Association, P.O. Box 542, Dickson, TN 37056, Attn. J.S.T. Disaster Relief; Trace Creek Baptist Church, 1320 Broadway Ave., New Johnsonville, TN 37134; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105-9959. Memorials may be left at the funeral home as well.
