For the better part of three quarters, the Cascade Champions just wouldn’t let Huntland pull away.

At the end of the third frame on Friday night, Cascade trailed the Lady Hornets by just six points.

But fatigue and a trap defense ultimately proved the difference as Huntland went on to win 72-53.

“I think we ran out of gas and just didn’t have enough legs to compete against their half-court trap,” Lady Champion coach Kelly Davis said.

Utilizing the defensive traps, Huntland has now built an eight-game win streak following Friday’s win over Cascade.

Huntland led 19-18 after the first and scored 12 points in the second quarter, which was matched by Cascade.

Following the third, the Lady Hornets had just a six point lead over Cascade.

Cascade was dealt a blow with Ally Murdock picking up her fourth foul and being forced to the sideline.

“Losing her (Murdock), she’s a game-changer. It’s hard not having her on the floor,” Davis said.

Murdock was a key force for the Lady Champs, scoring 15 points against Huntland, including 11 in the first quarter.

Ultimately, depth became an issue as Huntland was able to rattle loose for 23 points in the fourth quarter and pull away for the 19-point win.

Huntland’s AJ Stephenson led all scorers with 27 points, while Makenna Lamb led Cascade with 17.

For Cascade, while it went down as another loss, the Lady Champions are trending up.

Having been able to compete at limited stretches early in the season, Cascade is knocking on the door of putting a full game together—a goal which Davis hopes her team can hit by the postseason.

“It was small goals, but now we’re getting three quarters in. Now we’re reaching for that fourth quarter finish and hoping to have enough gas to get a complete game,” she said.

Cascade will be on the road Tuesday for another District 8-A game at Fayetteville.
