After a preseason full of scrimmages and playdates, new Cascade head coach Wendy Williams couldn't have asked for a better start to the regular season.
On Tuesday night, her squad saw solid production across the field and blanked visiting Cannon County, 7-0.
“I think our girls came out strong. They showed they're capable of playing their game. We have a deep bench and are able to depend on our younger girls,” Williams said.
It didn't take Cascade long to get the scoring started as Angelina Rodriguez scored the first of her two goals in the match just four minutes into regulation.
She added a second strike in the 21st minute.
Cascade continued to dominate the possession and tacked on two more scores in the first half—the first of which came off the toe of Morgan Housch in the 26th minute.
Kelsey Shatley closed the first half on a high note with a fourth goal in the 36th minute.
Able to rely on a deep bench chalked full of younger players, Cascade continued to get production from Housch, who notched her second goal of the night in the 41st minute.
Abby Clare Lamb and Savannah Soto finished off the scoring with goals in the 57th and 65th minutes to complete the shutout victory.
While several players were able to break through the Cannon County defense, Williams says it was a complete team effort that landed the first regular season victory.
“It's hard to pick out one or two since they are really coming together as a team. I'm proud to see the progress they are making on the field,” Williams added.
Even with a handful of veteran players sidelined with injury, Williams said a huge positive from Tuesday's match was the effort the younger players brought to the field.
“We are able to depend on our younger girls. We're suffering from injuries right now and a couple of our older girls hurt and out right now. We didn't miss a beat with the younger ones. They were fantastic. They came in and played the same game,” she said.
With a convincing victory in the books, Williams hopes the Lady Champions can take the positives from Tuesday's match and carry it forward as the regular season gets underway.
“That's our plan. We hope to continue this type of play throughout the season,” she said.
