PETERSBURG — A valiant effort by Liberty's Anna Haskins came up just short in the 2020 season opener at Unity on Thursday night.
Haskins matched a game-high 27 points scored by Unity's Abby Bryan, but Unity was able to hold on for the slim 45-42 win over the Lady Patriots.
Liberty fell behind Unity in the opening frame, 10-5, and trailed 26-15 at the half.
But Liberty kicked it into overdrive in the second half and went on 25-point tear, while holding Unity to just 14 points.
In the third frame, Liberty outscored Unity 8-1 and tacked on 17 more in the fourth quarter.
That 17-point rally forced a 40-40 tie at the end of regulation.
Unity went on to add five points in the overtime period to claim the win.
Haskins' 27 points led the Lady Patriots, which included four treys.
Bryan also added 27 points to lead the winners, but provided the bulk of her damage at the free throw line, where she connected on 13 of 19 tries, including a combined 11 of 15 between the fourth quarter and overtime.
Liberty will open its home slate on Tuesday, hosting Fayetteville at 6 p.m.
