Local United Way hosts ‘Day of Caring’

Several non-profit organizations benefited from the dedication of workers during the recent United Way of Bedford County’s Day of Caring.

Jostens, Newell Brands and First Community Bank provided volunteers who completed several projects for non-profits who are also partners of United Way of Bedford County.

“We appreciated the work and the enthusiasm of the volunteers,” Mark McGee, executive director of United Way of Bedford County, said. “Like so many things in 2020 COVID-19 affected both the number of volunteers available as well as the number of projects submitted.”

Jostens volunteers washed the windows at Christ Lutheran Church, which is also the headquarters for the Bedford County Caregiver Relief Program. Jostens employees also painted ceiling tiles and pressure washing for the Shelbyville-Bedford County Senior Citizens Center.

Newell Brands built and prepared boxes for the Boys and Girls Club to use for a planned gardening project. In addition, Newell Brands plans to help with the duct work for the new dental facilities for the Community Clinic.

First Community Bank employees counted school supplies collected during United Way of Bedford County’s “Stuff the Bus” program in preparation for distribution to students in need at county schools.

“Reports I have received indicate the volunteers enjoyed their time working for these organizations,” McGee said. “We would like to expand the number of businesses who provide volunteers next year and look forward to being able to serve more of our non-profit partners by completing projects they might need during our Day of Caring.”

Tyson Foods once again provided the food for the lunch held at the H.V. Griffin Park Complex. Grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and banana pudding were prepared by the Canteen/LC Vending Services. Pat Wilmhoff, Olaf Jimenez and Brother Ron DeWitt represented Tyson.

“The lunch is always the highlight of the day,” McGee said. “Due to COVID-19 restrictions we served the meals in takeout boxes and many people took advantage of that while some enjoyed the meal with friends and co-workers at the pavilion.“Day of Caring is just one of many examples of where United Way of Bedford County provides services to local citizens. We are always looking for sponsors, volunteers and donations and appreciate the support we have received.”
