A man accused of taking money from a Bell Buckle-area woman faces multiple charges.
Johnny Robert Bowen Jr., 43, of Lafayette Street, is charged with elder abuse, actions by a home improvement provider, and fraudulent use of a credit/ATM card.
“He was hired by a Bell Buckle-area woman to do a landscaping job,” Detective Chris Brown of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office said.
“He did a small portion of the work but took cash payments and her credit card to buy more supplies for the job.”
Bowen allegedly didn’t complete the job and eventually used the credit card to purchase items for his personal use, Brown said.
A total of approximately $48,000 was taken from the then-71-year-old victim, according to Brown.
Bowen, who operates Quality Plants and Landscaping, posted $100,000 bond, Brown said.
Church vandalized
More BB shots have been fired into Lone Oak Church of Christ, Highway 130 West.
Seven windows were shot by BBs between Nov. 6-13, the BCSO was told. More damage was found Wednesday along with additional BBs.
Drug charges
•Charges were filed against a man who allegedly tried to ride away on a bicycle from an officer in a patrol car Monday.
Michael Henry Welter Jr., 43, threw a bag containing 0.3 grams of methamphetamine and a small amount of marijuana toward the courthouse as he rode around the Shelbyville square with Officer James Sharp behind him.
Welter, listed as “homeless” in the Shelbyville Police Department report, was arrested shortly afterwards. He was charged with simple possession and on a previous warrant for theft. Bond was set at $2,000.
•Drugs were allegedly found on a man at a North Main Street convenience store shortly after midnight Tuesday.
Officers called to do a “welfare check” on Randall J. Swindle, 52, of Midland Road, allegedly found a hypodermic needle containing liquid methamphetamine in his vehicle, a glass pipe with drug residue in his clothing, and a suboxone strip in his wallet.
Swindle was arrested at the RaceTrak store.
Charges of possession of schedule 2 and 3 drugs and paraphernalia and violations of parole and probation were filed against Swindle. Bond was set at $16,000.
•Methamphetamine was confiscated from a vehicle during a traffic stop Tuesday night on North Main Street, police said.
Wendy Janette Wallace, 50, of Fayetteville. had a malfunctioning brake light, Officer Jonathan Evans’ report said. Evans said he smelled marijuana and was told by Wallace the vehicle was uninsured and she didn’t have her license present.
A computer check showed Wallace had been arrested four times previously for driving on a license suspended due to failure to provide insurance or pay fines. Field Training Officer Dylan Bliss and Evans searched the vehicle and allegedly found a container with a “shard of meth” and a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine.
Wallace was charged with possession of a schedule 2 drug and paraphernalia, fifth offense driving on a suspended license and violation of the financial responsibility and vehicle light laws. Bond was set at $8,500.
Disturbance
A man accused of causing a disturbance in Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital’s emergency room Monday night was charged with disorderly conduct.
Dakota G. Hare, 27, of Murfreesboro, was arrested after police were called three times due to alleged threats toward nursing staff. Hare is accused of breaking out of restraints and swinging at staff members.
Police said Hare caused no incidents when en route to the nearby Bedford County Jail. Bond was set at $2,500.
Dangerous move
An argument turned dangerous Tuesday afternoon when a young woman angrily grabbed the steering wheel of her grandmother’s vehicle and ran it into a ditch, police said.
Shelbyville Officer Jerry Lawrence said in a report he watched the car swerve “violently” off Harts Chapel Road.
Joshlynn Bliss Northcutt, 19, of Mountain View Road, Bell Buckle, allegedly admitted the action. The grandmother said she had refused to give Northcutt money. Northcutt “threw a fit” and, when the grandmother said she was taking her to the nearby Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, grabbed the wheel, Lawrence’s report said.
Northcutt was charged with reckless endangerment, assault, and domestic assault. Bond was set at $3,000.
Rider gets away
A woman given a ride along Highway 41A North took a rifle, backpack, and speaker from the man she encountered and disappeared after they stopped at a store along the way Wednesday, a BCSO report said.
The man said he hadn’t known her earlier and only knew her as “Anita.”
Blue light blues
A second driver within two weeks has been stopped for driving with blue lights resembling those on law enforcement vehicles.
Officer Andrew Koehler said a car-wide solid blue light appeared from a distance to resemble a police cruiser with cruise lights activated.
The driver, Israel Gomez Ortiz, was cited for violation of the state light law, driving on a suspended license, and financial responsibility.
Hit-and-runs
Two drivers were charged with leaving the scene of an accident alleged hit-and-runs Wednesday,
Tina McKennis Cox, 27, of Landers Street, hit another vehicle at a Landers Street apartment complex, police said. Cox was also charged with DUI, open container, and refusing voluntary consent to a blood test.
Martin Salazar Balderas, 42, of Landers Street, allegedly drove through the scene of an injury accident on South Thompson Street and struck the mirror of an unoccupied Shelbyville Fire Department truck. Salazar complained that the fire vehicle was blocking the roadway, the report said.
Charges of driving without a license and not driving with due care were also filed against Salazar.
