UNIONVILLE – The Community Middle Viqueens stayed even with the MTCS Lady Cougars in the second half, but the Lady Cougar height advantage coupled with a frigid Viqueen performance at the free throw line was the difference as Community fell 40-24 in a basketball contest Thursday night.
The Viqueens were 2-of-20 at the line which contributed to the 16-point margin of defeat.
The Lady Cougars used their height to take an 8-0 lead in the opening quarter.
Community used a pressure defense and a Stevie Dickenson trey to narrow the MTCS lead to 11-5 before the Lady Cougars ended the quarter with a 16-7 lead.
MTCS scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to go up 27-7.
The Viqueens scored the final two baskets to cut the Lady Cougar advantage to 27-11 at halftime.
Community used another three-pointer by Dickenson to score the first five points of the third quarter and narrowed the MTCS lead to 29-19 before the Lady Cougars scored the final nine points to take a 38-19 advantage to the final quarter.
The Viqueen defense held the Lady Cougars to just two points in the quarter.
Izzy Martinez scored three points as Community scored the final five points of the game.
Dickenson had 10 points while Martinez had seven to lead the Viqueens.
Community is scheduled to play host to Eagleville Monday night at 6 p.m.
