In the second game of a doubleheader for Community, the Vikings (9-7) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead after a four-run first inning, but the Webb Feet answered back with 10 runs of their own in the third inning to mount a large lead that pushed them to a 14-10 victory.
The Vikings defeated Cornersville 8-7 in their first game of the day, so coach Robbie Davis decided to give some of his younger players an opportunity against Webb.
“We played a lot of young guys in this one tonight to give some guys some rest,” Davis said.
“We had one bad inning where we kicked it around and didn’t throw strikes. That always comes back to bite you. Webb did a good job of making the routine plays. That’s baseball and it’s a fun game.”
To start the game, starting pitcher Stratton Lovvorn put down the Feet in order for a strong first inning of work.
Lovvorn hasn’t spent much time on the mound this season, so Davis wanted to get him some valuable reps under his belt.
He continued his strong start into the second with three strikeouts in the inning, but Webb was able to score a run on a wild pitch.
The Feet found their groove in the third frame with a total of five singles and a few walks to give them some momentum.
Lovvorn was replaced by Samuel Holley in the third inning, but not before Webb was able to tack on several runs.
“Stratton hasn’t pitched in four years and I wanted to get him a start tonight,” Davis said.
“He did a good job the first couple innings, but he’s just not used to it. Our biggest bugaboo with our pitchers is we run counts full, walk guys, or hit guys. The pitching staff knows we have to get better at that. It’s a non-district game, so it’s good for them to get some reps in.”
Webb made a pitching change of their own to start their defensive half of the third inning, but the Vikings were able to push three runs across to make it a 11-9 game heading into the fourth inning.
The fireworks died off until the fifth inning when Webb knocked a three-run homer to extend their lead to 14-9.
Community scored their final run of the game in the final inning, but that was all for the Vikings.
