OUT OF THE VAULT: Vikings stun MTCS in '13 region

The 2013 Community Vikings rode a wild postseason Cinderella run, upsetting District 9-A champion MTCS before falling to White House Heritage in a thriller region title game.

During two regular season meetings, MTCS knocked off the Vikings by scores of 44-42 and 66-65.

The Cougars went on to claim the District 9-A title, while the Vikings settled for third.

Still, Community found itself in the thick of the Region 5-A talent and following a 53-48 opening win at Nashville Christian, the Vikings once again found themselves matched up against the Cougars in a win or go home elimination game.

"I told the kids before the game that if they wanted to get to the sub-state that they would have to play the best defense that they have ever played," Viking coach Robbie Davis said. "They went out and held their Mr. Basketball candidate (Derrick Spears) to zero points in the first half.”

Community never let the Cougars sniff an open shot and produced a defense that pestered the high-octane offense all night long.

The Purple and Gold defense finished the night with 12 blocked shots and dominated the Cougars off the glass to advance to the first region title game in nearly 20 years.

Luke Primm delivered in the clutch for the Vikings, sinking 5-of-6 free throw attempts in the closing seconds when the Cougars were forced to foul to stop the clock.

He led all scorers with 15 points, while Spears managed just 11.

I am just so proud of these guys," Davis said.

"Zeke Grissom, Logan Pierce and Tanner Simmons shut down one of the best players in the region and we just fed off of their efforts. The kids met the challenge on the boards and played their best all-around game of the year so far,” Davis added.

“We played under control and with a purpose. These guys have faith in their teammates to do their jobs, give them the opportunity, and they are fun to watch right now.”

Community advanced to the Region 5-A title game and despite catching fire at the right time of the season, were denied their first region title bid since 1985, by score of 49-48.

Community's season came to an end in the sectional round, one win short of reaching the state tournament.
