PETERSBURG — In their 2020 season debut on Thursday night, the Liberty Patriots appeared to only get stronger on the offensive floor as the game went along.

With a balanced attack, led by Broxton Landers' 12 points, the Patriots claimed their first win of the season, beating Unity 41-24.

Landers provided the early spark for the Patriots, scoring all eight of the team's points in the opening frame.

While Landers had the hot hand early, the defense limited Unity to just two points in the first quarter.

Both teams scored 10 points in the second quarter, but the Patriots had a chance to stretch its lead even farther.

Liberty, however went cold from the free throw line and was 2 for 11 in the quarter.

Still, the Patriots led 18-12 at the half and only grew in the third quarter with another 10-point effort. Liberty closed strong with 13 points in the fourth quarter to finish off the first victory of the season.

While the team only managed 5 of 17 tries from the line, Liberty did make good on a pair of three-pointers in the victory.

Liberty will host its home opener on Tuesday night against Fayetteville, following the Lady Patriots' game at 6 p.m.
