Scammer falsely claims IRS wants gift cards

Facebook messages from a “friend” turned out to be from an imposter whose lies were part of a scam attempt, the victim told Shelbyville police Monday.

The real friend’s Facebook Messenger account was hacked by someone using his name, the victim was told. The “friend” first told the victim Sunday she’d won money, then sent her to another person, who claimed she’d won $550,000 and would need to pay advance taxes on it with gift cards.

After buying $300 in gift cards and sending images of the backs of the cards to the second scammer, the victim was told police had stopped the truck that was bringing her winnings to the Internal Revenue Service. The victim followed orders to send $1,000 more in gift cards in order for the IRS to release the money.

The IRS does not request gift cards and conducts its official business by traditional mail, officials have repeatedly said.

The scammer called Monday asking for more gift cards. At that point the victim realized she was being scammed and notified her bank and police.

**Suspect found

A suspect wanted on multiple charges was found with methamphetamine, a syringe and scales when officers arrested him at his Tyne Road home early Monday, police said.

Four officers walked from a distance to the home and arrested Casey Lee Ward, 33, shortly before 4 a.m. A bag of meth Ward said belonged to him was found atop a car he and other men were repairing,

Ward was charged with possession of a schedule II drug, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, evading arrest, fifth offense driving on a revoked license, reckless endangerment, and simple possession. He was held on $32,500 bond

**Theft

A wedding ring and watch were stolen from a coffee table in the living room of an Anderton Road home, a Bedford County deputy was told Monday.

An installation crew from a Murfreesboro electronics store were listed as suspects.

**Truck in creek

A Normandy-area man was charged with criminal trespassing after running his truck into the creek underneath the Normandy-Tullahoma Road train trestle early Wednesday.

Deputy Josh Nave found Randy Lee Prince, 43, of U.S. 41A South underneath the tracks around 12:15 a.m.

Prince said the truck ran out of gas up the road and he pushed it underneath the trestle. He told Nave the truck started, but he forgot to put it in park and it rolled into the creek.

Nave’s report said Prince had been found in the same area approximately two weeks ago and told not to return. He was also charged with fourth offense driving on a suspended license and held on $6,000 bond.

A dog in the truck with Prince was turned over to Bedford County Animal Control.
