Shelby Chapter DAR held its monthly meeting at Riverbend Country Club on Wednesday. Two community members were recognized for their contributions-one for education- the other for veterans' service. The two honored were Bedford County's own, Billy Hix and Amy Martin.
Humble as always, the two Bedford County natives graciously received pins and awards for their service. Shelby Chapter regent Ardis Rittenberry Caffey made the presentation.
Martin, retired from state education, now works as a volunteer organizer for the non profit, Quilts of Valor. She was asked during the meeting how many quilts she's presented to local veterans, Martin said she just tells people "a lot." But last count, it was hundreds; she gave credit to her many seamstress friends.
Martin read the tongue-in-cheek seamstress poem, "Cloth." She told DAR members how her home is filled with remnants and bolts of fabric. Her motto is when life gives your scraps, make quilts.
Hix was recognized for his work with NASA; he told the group exciting aspects of his work. But DAR members wanted to also recognize educator Hix for having provided numerous schools with free STEM programs. Hix said he's already booked for the coming school year.
He is currently president and chief executive officer of Teach STEM, Astronomy and Education Ambassador to Chile. He is also founder and director of the Motlow College STEM outreach program and NASA Solar System Ambassador.
The two recipients said they were deeply honored to receive their DAR recognitions.
