Despite COVID-19, Shelby Chapter of DAR members have continued to have a proactive season, according to Regent Ardis Rittenberry Caffey.

One of the mosts memorable events likely this season, she says, has been the DAR’s monetary presentation to Tim Estes for the Wreaths Across America program-one which benefits families wanting to place Christmas wreaths on the graves of their loved ones.

Estes said recently that because of the pandemic, it’s been a tough year, in many respects, for the Wreaths Across America program. He and co-worker, Cindy Cartwright, recently accepted the local donation from Shelby Chapter.

DAR members met on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Riverbend Country Club. Regent Ardis Rittenberry Caffey called the meeting to order and led in the DAR rituals. Secretary and Treasurer reports were given by Teresa Gill and Marie Parsons.

In the absence of Chaplain, Maureen Garrett, the devotion was delivered by Roxanna Francesconi.

After lunch, the first order of business was to present former Times-Gazette editor, John Carney, with an Honorable Mention Certificate from the Tennessee State DAR Press Media & Video Department. Shelby Chapter had nominated him for this award because of his assistance in publicizing chapter activities over the years.

Next was presentation of service awards to Shelby Chapter members. Certificates were presented to Teresa Gill for 40 years and Margaret Smith and Marilyn Lewis for 10 years. Absent were Margaret Anderson with 20 years service and Westelle Giles for 25 years.

As one of the Regent's goals for this year to support local schools, Shelby Chapter Members unanimously voted to donation $100 to each of the eight Bedford County elementary schools (Eakin, Liberty, Learning Way, Eastside, Southside, Cascade, Community, and Thomas Magnet. These funds can be used at each school’s discretion.

A separate donation of $257 was also made to Kate Duncan Smith DAR School in Alabama.

Shelby Chapter’s annual fundraiser auction was conducted by “auctioneer” Teresa Gill; she was assisted by Sherry Sorrells. Members bring items from their own personal possessions for auction.

Treasurer Marie Parsons said this is always a great time for not only fun, but also very beneficial in funding projects during the year.

Hostess chairman for the November meeting was Gay Mixon; she was assisted by Muriel Robinson and Regent Ardis Rittenberry Caffey.

The Chapter will not meet in December.

On Jan. 27, Shelby Chapter DAR will host a joint meeting with chapters from Shelbyville, Tullahoma, Lewisburg and Fayetteville. Amy Martin will present three veterans with Quilts of Valor.
