Short-handed Eaglettes fall in consolation round

MANCHESTER — A short-handed Eaglette squad fell short in the District 6-AAAA consultation game with a 61-46 loss to Franklin County on Friday night.
Shelbyville Central, playing with only seven players dressed out, fought till the end and led 10-9 after the first quarter and posted a 23-20 advantage at halftime.
“I admire our battle in dealing with adversity. Not having (Sammie Brown) available and only one day to prepare for that really limited us. You could really see her absence on the defensive backboards," Eaglette coach Kyle Turnham said.
"We needed some people to step up in her absence and it didn’t happen.”
Franklin County took over the game in the second half and outscored the Eaglettes by 18 points.
“I thought the difference in the game was our inability to control the defensive glass. Our first shot defense was solid, but our lack of detail and physicality on box outs really hurt us,” Turnham said.
“It seemed like every time we’d force a missed shot, Franklin County would come up with an offensive rebound to score, get fouled or extend plays," Turnham said.
“In addition, we needed to be more efficient at the free throw line. We left seven  points on the floor there and that really hurts. Those missed free throws make it a five-point game and that hill isn’t quite as steep to climb back up.”
Franklin County cashed in on nine 3-pointers, including five in the fourth quarter.
“We just couldn’t get enough stops in the second half," Turnham said, "Their offensive rebounding and 3-point shooting really came through for them.”
Baylor Russell led the winners with 18 points.
Lilly Brown scored 11 for Shelbyville Central.
The Eaglettes will play in the region tournament on Friday night.
