Miles Simons won the gold medal at the Tennessee State Junior Olympic International Skeet Tournament on April 22-24 at the Maury County Gun Club in Columbia.
Johnathon Savage took the silver medal.
Gracie Hensley won the women’s silver.
Simons earned bib number 1 going into the finals due to strong performances in the qualifying rounds.
Webb classmate Johnathon Savage, who won the state title last year, also had a strong performance at the tournament.
However, Simons shot an uncommonly high score of 58 out of 60 in the finals to take the gold.
“Miles has always been consistently strong in the qualifying rounds, but this time he followed through with a world-class performance in the finals. To put his score of 58 in perspective, the gold medal winner at the Tokyo Olympics this past summer shot a 59,” said Webb coach Buck Smith.
Smith added, “Miles and Johnathon have traded the state championship for all four years of their high school careers. Miles won this year and in 2019, and Johnathon won in 2020 and 2021. They have competed against each other like true gentlemen, and I doubt they would have accomplished as much without each other.”
“Johnathon and Miles began as sixth graders when Webb’s competitive clay target program started up again in 2015,” Smith continued. “Their hard work and success was instrumental in building the program. I know I speak for all the coaches when I say it has been a genuine privilege to watch them over the past seven years.”
