Soup kitchen runs low on funds

To the editor,

In these difficult and uncertain times, we all have struggles that we could not have imagined a year ago. We move through each day hoping to cope with what our daily “new normal” looks like. We miss contact with our families, our friends, our church, our workplace. We pray for the sensitivity we need to understand how we can be used to bridge gaps caused by generations of hurt and humiliation. We pray for a world that seems to spin in chaos. Just as we are dealing with these manifest problems, we must work to find ways that anchor us in service, realizing that there are those whose problems outweigh our own. Exacerbating life’s current uncertainties, food insecurity is a real and challenging situation for a segment of our community’s population.

For the past four plus years, Shelbyville Community Soup Kitchen (SCSK) has provided meals for our community’s homeless and marginal citizens. The months of March and April proved difficult in that, with the church which housed the operation closed, and large gatherings a threat to safety, no meals could be provided. In mid-May, Tony Edwards of Rowdy Ranch Catering offered a remote means to feed soup kitchen’s guests using a drive-by setting. This has proven to be a blessing and a successful way to ensure 130-140 people are being served a boxed meal each Tuesday.

While this is helping meet a nutritional need, the funds to sustain it are waning. With the COVID-19 situation ongoing, undertaking the annual fundraising meal for SCSK is not a possibility this year. Therefore, it is important that we, as a community, become more invested in providing the monies necessary to continue serving this most vulnerable segment of our society. We need your immediate and ongoing help!
