SPD fall ‘Fun Run’ is success

Shelbyville Police Department held its annual Fun Run Saturday morning—an event which is held to raise money that goes out to multiple families and communities around middle Tennessee.

Turnout was great this year, according to office manager Kim Nash. Almost 100 participants were registered, she said.

Chief Jan Phillips said it wouldn’t be possible without the joint ventures from the community and local businesses.

There was no fun run event last year, but in the previous year, Nash said they raised around $27,000.

The SPD assists victims of crimes, such as abused children, by providing Christmas gifts and parties for underprivileged kids, according to Chief Phillips.

And for police officers who have been killed in the line of duty, donations from this fundraiser go to assist the families of those fallen officers.

SPD also gives out three $2,000 scholarships to seniors at Central, Cascade, and Community High Schools who are interested in majoring in criminal justice. Donations from the fun run event also help the police department reach out to communities beyond the Bedford area.

Two officers lost just about everything in the recent Waverly floods, so monetary donations went to assist the police officers and their families, Chief Phillips said.

Nash added, “It’s a really great event, and I loved being a part of it.”
