TO THE FINALS: Vikings reach 12-AA title

UNIONVILLE - After not playing in 11 days, it was rightly a concern for Coach Robbie Davis that his Community Vikings would need to knock off some rust in their District 12-AA semifinal game Tuesday night against the Forrest Rockets.

Once the second quarter started, the Vikings were playing at full throttle.

Community (18-7) scored 50 points in the middle two quarters and led by as many as 34 points en route to a 77-48 win.

"We were all nervous about that first game back when you're off that long," Davis said. "Forrest had some momentum coming in. There was a lot of anxiety in that first quarter."

Evan Petrie played a huge role as the Vikings pulled away from the upset-minded Rockets, who won their third game of the season and advanced to the semifinals by beating Nolensville the night before.

Petrie scored 10 first quarter points including the basket that gave the Vikings the lead for good at 4-3.

Community ended the quarter with a 17-13 advantage.

With Will Reed scoring 13 points and Petrie adding 10 more, the Vikings asserted themselves in the second quarter with two scoring runs.

The Vikings went on an 8-0 run to lead 34-19 with 3:22 to play.

Community proceeded to score the final nine points in a two-minute span and led 45-23 at the halftime break.

"In that second quarter, I really challenged our guys," Davis said. "We've got a quarter under our belt, let's keep going."

"Evan Petrie stepped up. We know Evan can have nights like that," Davis added.

"He's such a team guy and they all are," Davis said. "If they see a guy scoring, they'll feed him."

It was Petrie leading the way with seven points while Stratton Lovvorn added five as the Vikings kept the pressure on in the third quarter.

Petrie and Lovvorn each had a dunk during a 12-0 run that gave the Vikings a 61-28 lead with 3:44 to play.

Community ended the quarter with a 67-33 lead.

The Viking substitutes saw plenty of action in the final quarter as Community punched its ticket to the district finals.

Petrie scored 27 points to lead three Vikings in double figures. Reed added 18 points while Jackson Bailey had 10.

Walker Herring lead the Rockets with 17 points.

The Vikings were 22-of-30 at the free throw line while Forrest was 7-of-10.

By virtue of a Central Magnet win over top-seeded Marshall County in the other district semifinal, the Vikings will host Central Magnet for the District 12-AA championship Thursday night at 7 p.m.

"That's going to be really nice to play at home and get a chance to play for a championship," Davis said.

"Hopefully we'll have a nice crowd and our kids will show up and compete like I know Central Magnet will."
