TOURNAMENT MADNESS: Vann's shot advances Lady Feet to state semis

BELL BUCKLE - With the game on the line, there's nobody Webb coach Matt Shewmake would rather take a last shot than Lauren Vann.

After Tipton-Rosemark (15-4) hit a three-pointer to go up 59-58 with 24 seconds left in Friday night's Division II Class A state quarterfinal, Vann found an opening and fired a corner three-pointer that hit nothing but nylon with three seconds left, which proved to be Webb's game winner in the 61-59 victory.

"I can't think of anybody else I'd rather take it. She's got enough guts and enough skill to make it," Shewmake said.

Webb (26-2) grabbed the lead at the 7:15 mark of the first quarter and held the lead throughout the remainder of the first half despite a pair of back-to-back baskets in the final seconds of the second quarter.

Throughout that first half, however, Vann made her mark on the game by scoring 11 points in the first two quarters.

She piled up three fouls in the first half however and to make matters worse, was whistled for her fourth on a charge with 5:26 left in the third frame, forcing Vann to the bench.

She didn't reenter the game until 3:50 remained in the fourth.

"I didn't feel like we could miss her but we had to. She's been a leader on this team all year, all through preseason workouts. She's the one getting in the gym and getting shots up. She's hungry. She wants this bad. I don't have to ask her to work hard. I don't have to ask her to play hard. She comes in and does it every day," Shewmake said.

With fouls mounting against Webb, Tipton-Rosemark was able to pull within one possession until Bri Hall drilled a three-pointer at the 2:03 mark to tie the game at 56 apiece.

Lashae Dwyer briefly put Webb back on top after she drew a foul with 1:06 left in the fourth and was sent to the line for a one-and-one attempt, which she promptly cashed in on both tries.

Webb's lead was short-lived however.

Cat Turner gave Tipton-Rosemark the lead with 21 seconds left when she drilled a corner three with 21 seconds left.

Webb took the ensuing inbound pass the length of the court and found an open Vann in the corner, who fired the game-winner in the final seconds.

"That's kind of how we designed it where she would be on the back end wide open,"Shewmake said.

Tipton-Rosemark got quality production throughout its roster, with Hall's 15 points leading the Lady Rebels.

Turner added 13 while Raven Sims added 11.

"They (Tipton-Rosemark) are probably the most talented team in the state from top to bottom. We watched them on film and knew how good they are. I have a ton of respect for the kids on that team because they battled and have a lot of heart. We just made enough plays to win it," Shewmake said.

As a team, Tipton-Rosemark connected on eight three-pointers.

Webb, in contrast, made just three, though none were bigger than Vann's as time expired.

She led the Lady Feet with 16 points, while Shanice Simpson-Whitely added 16 points of her own.

Dwyer also hit double figures and added 11 points as well.

Vann's shot kept the magic of Webb's season alive as the school now ventures into uncharted waters, marking the first appearance at the state semifinal level and Shewmake says the excitement is at a fever pitch.

"It's school history and has never been done. The buzz around this campus is electric," he said.

Webb will tip-off in the Division II Class A state semifinals at Tennessee Tech on Thursday afternoon.
