UPSET ALERT: Eagles stun No. 1 Franklin Co.

In a huge upset that was heard across the mid-state, No. 4 Shelbyville Central claimed a 57-54 win over top-seed Franklin County in the opening round of the District 6-AAAA Tournament on Tuesday evening at the Rick Insell Gymnasium.
The Golden Eagles has lost the three previous regular season games to the Rebels, with the last matchup going to double overtime last week.
Shelbyville Central will face Coffee County in the district tournament championship on Saturday night at 7:30 at home.
Shelbyville Central was 1-7 in regular season district play.
“Super proud of my guys. They battled the entire night and found a way to win,” Shelbyville Central first-year head coach Kody Howard said.
“Every single player contributed to our win tonight, as well as our student section. They showed up and gave us that extra juice to cross the finish line.”
It was a game marred with a lot of fouls called on both teams with a total 51 combined fouls that led to 67 free-throws.
Shelbyville Central was whistled for 23 fouls and connected on 27-of-37 free throw attempts, while Franklin County had 28 fouls and cashed in on 17-of-30 free throws.
The Eagles posted leads of 9-8 at the end of the opening frame, 17-12 at the intermission and were up
38-32 after three periods.
The game remained close throughout the fourth quarter and the Rebels did tie the score at 52-52 late in the game but Devyn Heath and Tim Parsons came up bit at the charity stripe to secure the win.
Jason Ragland pitched in a game-high 21 points to lead the winners while Heath added 16 markers.
Kaleb Rigsby netted 14 and KeAndre Johnson and Kai Baker followed with a dozen points apiece to pace Franklin County.
“I can’t wait to see everyone in Shelbyville Saturday night for the championship. Be early and be loud,” Howard said. “Go Eagles.”
