Vikings cap great week with Senior Day win

UNIONVILLE - The Community Vikings capped off a successful weekend of baseball with a 7-5 Senior Day victory over the Fairview Yellow Jackets on Saturday.

On a picture perfect day for baseball, the Yellow Jackets scored in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Community (19-11) loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with the help of singles from pitcher Jacob Hawkins and Ethan Greer but could not score.

The Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 in the top of the fifth before the Vikings broke the ice in the bottom of the inning.

A single by Samuel Holley along with two walks loaded the bases for Community with two outs.

Evan Petrie and Jacob Cooper both coaxed walks that forced home runs and tied the game at 2-2.

Mason Russell followed with a 2-run single to give the Vikings a 4-2 lead.

The Vikings added three insurance runs in the sixth.

Dylan Norris singled and Zander Thurber had a bunt single to put two runners on base.

After Will Reed reached base on an error, Petrie delivered a 2-run single to put Community up 6-2.

Cooper drove home a run on a fielder's choice to increase the Viking lead to 7-2.

Fairview created a scare in the seventh by scoring three runs and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Hawkins fielded a comebacker for the final out.

Hawkins went the distance for the Vikings as the senior struck out nine with at least one strikeout in every inning.

Before the game, the Vikings recognized eight seniors from this season's squad and two seniors from the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

"We really wanted to make sure we remembered the seniors from last year," Viking coach Robbie Davis.

"They did a lot for our program and we only got three games in last year."

"I can't say enough about this senior group," Davis added."I've had them for a really long time."

"They're all good kids. They're well-mannered, they show up and they work, and they're good teammates," Davis said.

"You never hear any of them talk about their stats. It's about winning and losing," Davis added.

I'm glad they got to play this season."
