UNIONVILLE - The Community Viking offense was sluggish at times, but the defense was lights out as the Vikings kept the pressure on and defeated the Forrest Rockets 58-39 in a District 12-AA basketball contest Tuesday night.

It was the fourth consecutive district win for Community (12-9, 5-2).

"Our defensive pressure on the ball, off the ball, and switching from our top six or seven guys is pretty good right now," Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said.

The Vikings jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed as Stratton Lovvorn scored five points in the opening quarter.

The Rockets had trouble with their shot selection against the swarming Community defense as the Vikings led 13-4 at the end of the quarter.

Evan Petrie scored five points as the Vikings increased their lead to 22-6 with 3:37 left in the second quarter.

Community could only manage three points the remainder of the quarter as the Rockets cut the Viking lead to 25-15 at the half.

After scoring just two points in the first half, Jackson Bailey went on a scoring splurge in the final 16 minutes.

Bailey scored nine third-quarter points while Will Reed had five as the Vikings were a perfect 9-of-9 at the free throw line.

Community scored the first 10 points of the quarter to go up 35-15 with 4:32 left and took a 43-26 lead to the final quarter.

Bailey started the quarter with two 3-point plays as the Vikings took a 49-29 lead.

Bailey scored the first eight points and had 12 in the quarter as Community rolled to the win after taking its biggest lead at 58-36 with 3:59 remaining.

Bailey led three Vikings in double figures with 23 points, including 21 in the second half.

Petrie had 13 points while Reed added 10.

Walker Herring led Forrest with 14 points.

The Vikings shot an outstanding 15-of-17 at the foul line while the Rockets were 4-of-7.

Community celebrates Senior Night at home against Nolensville Friday night. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

***Davis on his team's defense:

We set the pace early. We only gave up four points in the first quarter. Our guys are really starting to understand how to play good man defense."

***Davis on Jackson Bailey's second half scoring onslaught:

Jack is one of those guys that every coach wants to have on their team. He's a hard-working kid. But tonight he started reverting to some things and only had two points in the first half. He and I had a conversation at halftime. He gets 21 in the second half and goes 7-of-7 from the free throw line. To his credit, he made the adjustment."

***Davis on Evan Petrie:

Evan may be the most-improved post guy I've ever coached from one season to the next. Just by the way he does every little thing imaginable. He guarded their big guy. Evan got around, he was physical, and he used his quickness.

***Davis on fans coming back to the games:

We all took for granted that we all got to go to games. Now that things are coming back, people will want to go do these things and enjoy them even more.

***Davis on the sounds of the game:

It's so nice to hear the noise of the game. You just had the crowd of a good competitive girls' game carrying into the boys' game. You make runs and the fans are into it and you hear chants.

***Davis on the return of the students, cheerleaders, and band:

There's no people happier than our administration and our fans. We sold a ton of student tickets. And I'm happy for the cheerleaders and the band. They work just as hard as basketball guys do. It's not just about what you see on the court. Those girls are in here practicing just as much as we are.

I'm happy for our students, cheerleaders, and band members, especially the ones who are getting close to graduation that won't be here next year.

I know what it's like.

I had a daughter that was a softball senior player who lost her senior year. Just for them to put their uniform on and come out and do their thing."
