Vikings pass Champs in late innings

In what was the final game played in the Walking Horse Classic on Friday evening, the Community Vikings dueled cross-county rival Cascade early on but plated runs in every inning to claim the 7-2 non-district win.

Early on, the two teams went blow-for-blow on the scoreboard.

Both teams plated a single run in the first two innings.

Will Reed scored the game's first run on an Evan Petrie RBI single in the first inning.

Cascade answered when Chance Brown drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at one apiece.

Jacob Cooper put the Vikings back on top after he safely reached on a one-out single in the second inning.

He scored on a Jacob Hawkins single to put Community up 2-1.

But as before, the Champions found an answer and scratched the tying run across the plate.

Brown was once again the culprit and got the offense going after he was hit by a pitch during his second plate appearance.

Logan McDonald drove him home after he smoked a double to the right field fence to once again tie the game.

Community once again took the lead in the third frame but never gave up control of the scoreboard in the final three innings played.

Dylan Norris crushed a solo-homer to deep center field and Petrie scored on a sacrifice fly for the following two runs.

The Vikings added two more in the fourth inning when Petrie doubled to score Cooper and Christopher Underwood stole home.

Petrie scored the game's final run when Mason Russell ground into a fielder's choice.

Cooper had the hot night at the plate, recording two of the Vikings' six hits, while it was Norris' blast that was the biggest hit of the night for Community.

Cascade on the other hand struggled to put the ball in play over the last three innings.

Cascade struck out six times over the final three innings and managed just two base hits in the process.

Hawkins got the win on the mound, pitching all five innings for Community and gave up two runs on four hits, but struck out nine batters.

Jake Bates got the start for the Champs and went four innings, allowing six runs on six hits.

Community was back in action on Monday night and traveled to Marshall County while Cascade hosted Fayetteville.
