UNIONVILLE - After falling behind by three runs in the final inning, the Community Vikings came off the deck with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Culleoka Warriors 6-5 Thursday on the opening night of the Walking Horse Classic.
It was a pitchers' duel as runs were at a premium for the first five innings.
Community (14-10) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
After Corey Paterick led off with a single and Will Reed was hit by a pitch, Jackson Bailey brought home the run with a sacrifice fly.
The Vikings went ahead 2-0 in the third as Paterick walked, advanced to second on an error and scored on a two-out single by Dylan Norris.
Meanwhile, Bailey pitched shutout baseball and struck out five while allowing five hits in the first five innings.
The Warriors broke the ice in the sixth inning and used an RBI-single and a wild pitch to tie the score at 2-2.
With the time limit expired, the seventh inning became the last inning with each team starting its at-bat with a runner on second.
Culleoka came out hitting in the seventh as four hits produced three runs and gave the Warriors a 5-2 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.
After a walk to Paterick, the Vikings closed the gap to 5-3 as Reed drove in a run with a single. With two out, Bailey drilled a double to tie the game at 5-5.
Mason Russell proceeded to reach base on an error with the throw eluding the first baseman, allowing Bailey to score and give the Vikings the walk-off win.
Paterick and Bailey each had two hits to lead the Vikings.
Reed and Jacob Hawkins relieved Bailey on the mound with Hawkins picking up the win.
