UNIONVILLE - The Community Vikings trailed by five points with just over a minute to play in regulation, but five consecutive free throws tied the game and a 10-of-11 performance at the foul line in the overtime sealed the deal as the Vikings defeated the Nolensville Knights 61-57 in a District 12-AA basketball contest Friday night.

"We got a win on Senior Night," Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said. "You want your seniors to go out on top."

Community (15-7, 6-2) used five points from Stratton Lovvorn and fourth points from Evan Petrie to jump out to a 13-8 lead after one quarter.

After scoring 13 points in the first quarter, points were hard to come by as the Vikings could only muster 13 points in the next two quarters combined.

The Vikings led 17-12 before a 7-0 Knight run gave Nolensville its first lead at 19-17 with 2:25 left in the second quarter.

Community scored the next three points and took a 20-19 advantage into halftime.

While the Vikings went over three minutes without a score in the third quarter, the Knights proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to take a 31-25 lead. The Knights took a 33-26 lead to the fourth quarter.

Nolensville increased its lead to 37-28 and led 43-35 with 4:45 to play before the Vikings fought back.

Will Reed connected on two treys and tallied eight points while Jackson Bailey had seven points as the Vikings cut the Knight lead to 44-42 with 2:23 remaining.

After Nolensville went up 47-42, a free throw by Bailey and two free throws by Reed coupled with a Knight miss on the front end of a one-and-one brought the Vikings to within 47-45 with 37 seconds left.

The Viking defense came up big as the Knights turned the ball over on a five-second violation while attempting to throw the ball in. Bailey was fouled on the ensuing possession and the senior canned two free throws to tie the game at 47-47 with 23 seconds left.

The Knights could not connect on a shot in the final seconds, forcing an extra four minutes of action.

A three-point play by Reed and a field goal by Maki Fleming were the first points of the overtime as the Vikings took a 52-47 lead with 1:51 remaining.

With the help of seven free throws by Reed, the Vikings went on a 7-0 run to go 59-49 with 29 seconds left and put the game out of reach.

Reed scored 21 points, including a perfect 11-of-11 at the free throw line to lead three Vikings in double figures.

Lovvorn had 16 points while Bailey added 13.

Keidron Batey led the Knights with 12 points.

The Vikings were 23-of-30 at the foul line while Nolensville was 8-of-12.

Community travels to Giles County for a 7:30 p.m. district game Tuesday night.

***Davis on Nolensville

Nolensville is one of the most athletic and well-coached teams in our district and in our area. They've got some kids that can absolutely play. We knew we had our hands full.

***Davis on his team's comeback

When they got up by six or seven in the second half, we called timeout and I challenged my guys. I said we're playing passive and we're not doing what we do. The next thing you know, Jackson and Evan score and get stops."

***Davis on his team's defense at the end of the fourth quarter

We were in a familiar situation with it being tied and the other team had the ball. We've lost four games this year on last second shots and we didn't have the ball. Tonight, we got a stop."

***Davis on his team gaining the advantage in the overtime

Maki Fleming with a steal. He's a freshman that's playing out of his mind. Will makes a big basket and we step up and knock down free throw after free throw."

***Davis on the crowd

This was a tournament atmosphere. We had a crowd tonight. The guys literally said we can't hear you when you're calling us.

***Davis reflects on Senior Night and his four seniors Bailey, Petrie, Reed, and Cooper

Coaching two sports here, I get lucky to have some of these guys in both. Those four seniors all play baseball. I've had them in both sports for four years. They're not my kids, but I feel like they are because we're always together. They're so much fun to be around."
