CHAPEL HILL - The Community Vikings took an early lead in their District 12-AA tournament game with the Forrest Rockets Thursday night and led 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when stormy conditions and heavy rains ended play for good.

Since five innings had been played to make the game official, the Vikings took the win to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

Community (21-12) wasted little time getting on the board in the opening inning.

After one out, pitcher Will Reed and Dylan Norris reached base on singles.

A Rocket error scored Reed and allowed Norris to reach third.

Evan Petrie followed with a RBI-ground out, scoring Norris and giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The Vikings plated another run in the second.

With one out, Sam Holley was hit by a pitch and stole second.

A Zander Thurber single advanced Holley to third.

With two outs, Reed helped his own cause with an RBI-single to put Community up 3-0.

Meanwhile, Reed got out of trouble in the bottom of the first after the first two Rockets reached base on singles.

Forrest was able to cut the Viking lead to 3-1 in the third with a two-out single and double.

The Vikings scored their final run in the fourth as Mason Russell led off with a double, advanced to third on a Holley single and scored on a Thurber sacrifice fly.

The Rockets mounted a serious threat in the fifth by loading the bases with one out but could only score one run on a sacrifice fly as the Viking lead was cut to 4-2.

With the leadoff batter up for the Rockets in the bottom of the sixth, dark clouds and heavy winds forced play to be stopped.

After a wait that included heavy rains, play could not continue and the game was declared official.

Reed had two hits to lead the Community 8-hit attack. Seven different Vikings had at least one hit.

"Our guys came out ready to play and did a great job of staying focused," Coach Robbie Davis of the Vikings said. "We had some great at-bats early and Will did a great job on the mound."

"We had a couple of defensive errors that led to their runs, but anytime you can go to Forrest and pick up a win in the district tournament, that's huge," Davis added.

Community played at top-seeded Nolensville in the semifinals of the tournament Friday night at 7 p.m.
