FAYETTEVILLE — The Community Viqueens led for just four seconds in their basketball season opener against the Fayetteville Lady Tigers Tuesday night, but the lead came at the right time as Haley Mitchell connected on a field goal with four seconds left to give the Viqueens a 45-43 win in a Hall of Champions contest.
Community had trouble finding the basket early as the Lady Tigers jumped in front.
M.J. Simmons kept the Viqueens close with two field goals as Fayetteville led 12-9 after the first quarter.
Mitchell led the way with three baskets in the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers upped their advantage by one and took a 24-20 lead into the intermission.
Despite five points from Mitchell in the third quarter, Fayetteville outscored the Viqueens 12-10 and took a 36-30 lead to the final quarter.
The Lady Tigers took their biggest lead at 39-30 and led 43-36 midway through the quarter before the Community defense took over.
The Viqueens held Fayetteville scoreless the rest of the way while chipping away at the Lady Tiger lead.  A three-pointer by Zoey Dixon and two free throws by Breanna Whitaker helped tie the game at 43-43 before the game-winning shot by Mitchell gave the Viqueens the come-from-behind win.
Mitchell led the Viqueens with 17 points while Simmons added 13.
The Viqueens were 12-of-21 at the free throw line while the Lady Tigers were 5-of-6.
