UNIONVILLE – The Community Viqueens could never get untracked from the field Wednesday night as the Huntland Lady Hornets defeated the Viqueens 49-31 in a non-district basketball game.
Points were scarce as both teams struggled to score in the opening half.
The Lady Hornets scored the first seven points of the game, but the Viqueens used four points from M.J. Simmons to cut the Huntland lead to 9-6 at the end of the first quarter.
It was an even tougher second quarter for points as the teams combined for 11 points. Simmons scored four points as Community (5-5) was outscored 6-5, but only trailed the Lady Hornets 15-11 at halftime.
Huntland was able to stretch its lead in the third quarter. The Viqueens were shut out from the field and could only manage five points from the free throw line as the Lady Hornets outscored Community 15-5 and took a 30-16 lead to the final quarter.
The Viqueens, led by six points from Zoey Dixon, had their best offensive output with 15 points in the quarter, but could not cut into the lead as Huntland tallied 19 points.
Anna Stevenson had 12 points to lead three Lady Hornets in double figures. Brooklyn Morris and Mikaylie Edwards each added 10 points.
Simmons led the Viqueens with 13 points.
The Viqueens were 0-of-13 from three-point range, but were an impressive 15-of-20 at the foul line.
"We struggled all night shooting," Coach Cody Pierce of the Viqueens said. "We've got to start hitting more shots. We know what we need to work on."
"We didn't win rebounding. They won the boards," Pierce added. "That was a big part of them taking over in the fourth quarter."
"We've got to find a way to be more consistent," Pierce said. "We're up and down. We've got to show up every night."
