UNIONVILLE — Not much has stood in the way of the Community Viqueens this season.
On Tuesday night, Community officially locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 6-A tournament, blasting Fayetteville City, 9-0.
“We've had a few slow starts. After we get in the flow of the game, we're having good ball movement and have been scoring well. Everything's going in the right direction for the right time of year,” Community coach Chris Brothers said.
After a slow start, Community settled in and Sara Beth Stacy blasted home the first goal of the night.
From there, Community struggled to put home another score for about six minutes.
Once Zoey Dixon fired home the second score of the night, Community smelled blood in the water and scored six times in the final 27 minutes of the half.
Dixon fired home a pair of scores, while Brianna Beech scored two and assisted on another.
Stacy scored her second of the half in the 26th minute on an assist by Abby Murrill.
Sophomore Addison Brothers scored the final goal of the half, giving Community a 7-0 lead.
The Viqueens scored two more times in the second half before the match was called in the 51st minute.
Lexi Molnar scored six minutes into the second half and Stacy completed her hat trick on a breakaway goal in the 51st minute.
“The defense has done a really good job and I think the fact we're able to control the ball from the mids and forwards makes our defense's job a little easier,” Brothers said.
Tuesday's win was the final regular season district match of the season and gives Community the No. 1 seed in the tournament, with No. 2 belonging to Cascade.
In the last few years, the margin between the two teams has been razor thin, with Cascade emerging on top.
Community hopes to break that trend in the 2020 postseason.
“Last year, we had a really good match with them here, but then we had a lot of injuries by the time we got back around to them. It would be really exciting to take this team and play them again,” Brothers said.
For the Viqueens, Brothers says its a core of nine seniors that have the potential to carry the team to uncharted waters in the postseason.
